Portrait of Tim Schoch

Freelancing since 2016. Alongside, I'm building Laica.dev, where we help companies automate their sales.

Born in Australia, native German and English, married, father of four, at home in the beautiful east of Europe. I roast my own coffee and like building nice things out of wood. People matter to me, especially those going through a rough patch right now.

What you get

One seasoned senior for the whole UX chain: strategy, research, workshops, and the daily craft inside the dev team. I understand code and architecture and can lead the UX work. I like complex processes and the moments when little is clear yet and you first have to find your bearings.

Business says

Tim quickly picked up the insurance knowledge he needed and won us over with his conceptual skills, his well worked-out ideas and his high standard of quality. He also showed a fine sense for the balance between a great solution and its feasibility – key to maximising the business value of our product.

Devs say

Our project started as the migration of a boring customer portal. With Tim's help we built a new, fresh and modern customer experience instead – in very little time. His mind doesn't only think in Adobe and pixels, but also in CSS, HTML and JavaScript – a developer at heart.

Fast in complex business processes

  • SBB Infrastruktur

Productive within a month. They then rehired me as a freelancer: a design system for the internal project-management platform (2017–20) and a visual network-planner editor (2020–21).
  • SBB Cargo

Research, concept and visual design for the new customer portal (2018–19).

Tim impressed me right away with a very deep understanding of UX concepts and frameworks on the one hand side and in depth technical and architectural knowledge on the other side. I would immediately work with Tim again.

Customer-centric

  • Die Mobiliar

For the customer portal we set up a UX strategy within four weeks, ran 20 research interviews, condensed them into three personas, led design sprints and improved our UX concept over three rounds of usability testing. The SUS score rose by 25 points to 84. The portal then lived for more than seven years.
  • intuitive collaboration

Redesign of a health-tech web app. Trained the team to run their own paper-prototype studies.

Our designers didn't lose a second: draw up a plan, talk to our customers, analyse the pain points and lay a solid conceptual foundation. The concept for the new customer portal was not only scalable and future-proof but also feasible – and above all it did extremely well in our usability tests.

Product strategy & stakeholder management

  • German mid-sized company (NDA)

Helped pivot an innovation project: first as UX lead, then as interim project lead. I set up agile ways of working and reported directly to the innovation lead and the board. The result was an MVP and a business plan for a B2B platform.
  • SIGA

Advised the CMO across several projects: one consistent UX across websites, CRM, SRM and customer portal.

I appreciated his professional approach, his high technicity and his friendly attitude, which gives him the capability to communicate and convince at all levels in the company. Development of new ideas and a high level of achievement are Tim's best skills.

Innovation

  • ETH Zürich, with afca

Mixed-reality app for teaching: uncharted territory, no templates, a solution that worked.
  • CSL Behring, with afca

PlasmiX mixed-reality app. Gold at Best of Swiss App.

Tim worked his way into a subject that was completely new to him and took the time to understand which aspects matter most to me as a scientist and lecturer.
